Creating the Emotional Trap
Using the Emotional Toolbox

By Laurie H. Hutzler

How does a Character Fall into the Trap?

The fear drives the character to create the mask. That character thinks the mask successfully hides the fear.

The character’s fear drives the mask. The character doesn’t want any one to know about or see his or her fear. The character even tries to hide the fear from him or her self.

The antagonist creates situations that tempt the character to cause problems for him or her self and/or others. The character falls into trouble traits and this activity does as much or more to trip the character up as do the actions of the antagonist.

The trouble traits also alienate or anger potential friends and allies leaving the character more exposed to the antagonist’s manipulations.

The character tries to get out of trouble by using his or her strongest traits. This is the way the character copes with the fear instead of facing it. It’s rather like treating the symptoms and ignoring the underlying disease.

The character’s greatest strength is also his or her greatest weakness. This strength/weakness feeds the character’s fear. When a character refuses to face something, it only grows more powerful.

The character continues to go around and around avoiding the fear and gets trapped in the upper part of the Character Map. Only a leap of faith will break the cycle or let the character bust free of the trap.

Laurie Hutzler’s Emotional Toolbox approach incorporates many of the same materials Laurie uses in her popular courses at the famed UCLA film school. It’s the same method Laurie uses in her own work and in all of her international consulting.

The Emotional Toolbox makes intuitive sense—it’s based on universal truths we all know and understand instinctively. Learn to use these principals consciously to make informed creative choices. The Emotional Toolbox is easy to use, and most importantly, it works.
