Using the Emotional Toolbox

Write the answer to Question One (the greatest misconception) on the top point of the map.

This first answer is the character’s  Mask.

i If you ask people what their mask is they will never be able to tell you. If you ask what the greatest misconception about them is they will always be able to tell you. We pretty much know what people say about us behind our backs. We wouldn’t know this unless we knew we were somehow projecting this image or impression. We also know this image is just front or façade. It’s not who we really are on the inside.

The Character's Mask is:

The false face (or false self) the character wears or projects in public.

The character’s protective outer shell

The image the character uses to hide or “mask” his or her greatest fear.

i This is how we first meet the character in the beginning of the story. It is the audience’s superficial “first impression” of the character. It’s also the general impression the others in the story have of the character.

Laurie Hutzler’s Emotional Toolbox approach incorporates many of the same materials Laurie uses in her popular courses at the famed UCLA film school. It’s the same method Laurie uses in her own work and in all of her international consulting.

The Emotional Toolbox makes intuitive sense—it’s based on universal truths we all know and understand instinctively. Learn to use these principals consciously to make informed creative choices. The Emotional Toolbox is easy to use, and most importantly, it works.
