This fifth answer is a list of the character’s Trouble Traits.

i This is how the character sabotages him or herself. It is how the character falls into self-limiting emotional traps. It is the way the character succumbs to the Antagonists temptations to behave badly. The character’s Trouble Traits are at the root of his or her problems with self and with others.

The Character's Trouble Traits are:

The combination of traits that make up the character’s Achilles heel.

The traits that the antagonist exploits to push, prod, lure or tempt the character into acting like a fool.

The traits that make the character fall into or create emotionally destructive situations.

i A character is always is or her own worst enemy. The Antagonist simply preys on the character’s fears and then goads or tempts him or her into falling into behavior which will cause the character trouble, alienate others, complicate problems or make a bad situation worse. A character’s own inner demons are a much more effective force of destruction than any external force exerted by another. Giving your character “feet of clay” will help make him or her more venerable, complex and interesting.

Laurie Hutzler’s Emotional Toolbox approach incorporates many of the same materials Laurie uses in her popular courses at the famed UCLA film school. It’s the same method Laurie uses in her own work and in all of her international consulting.

The Emotional Toolbox makes intuitive sense—it’s based on universal truths we all know and understand instinctively. Learn to use these principals consciously to make informed creative choices. The Emotional Toolbox is easy to use, and most importantly, it works.
